Leadership Ed. Certificate 2020-21 SESSION 6 - Counseling Through Crisis/Pandemic
Tuesday, March 23, 2021 4:00 - 5:00 pm

Many college admission professionals on the high school and college side may not come from a counseling academic background. What can we learn about tips and best practices from professionals in our field with counseling experience and education. How do we work with students during high-stress or moments of crisis that may be personal as well as national? We are excited to bring this conversation into our educational series to provide us with support in serving our students and families as well as maintaining our own health.Presenters:
- Alicia Ogelsby, Director of School and College Counseling, Bishop McNamara HS (MD)
- Maureen Ponce, Board Secondary Vice President, Maryland School Counselor Association (MD)
Moderated by Damian Garcia, Glenelg Country School (MD)

The Rural and Small Town SIG Workshop was a Big Success!
The Rural & Small Town SIG held their first ever virtual workshop on March 3, 2021 with a total of 50 attendees online! Originally the event was planned to take place in Beckley, West Virginia in person but due to the current state of affairs, the workshop was moved to Zoom and still offered a strong West Virginia focus.
The event concentrated on the college search process for rural students and provided additional information regarding special circumstances due to the pandemic. Through the morning sessions, discussion was had regarding the hurdles facing the college search process during this time, the ongoing conversation of paying for college, and the topic of gap years and alternative paths to a four year institution. We also heard from two students who shared their experiences coming from rural backgrounds and navigating their time in higher education.
Our goal is to continue to provide programming in the future to rural areas of the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia/Western Maryland, Eastern Shore Maryland, and then back down to rural areas of southern Virginia. For more information and how to get involved with the Rural & Small Town SIG, please feel free to contact Emily Ewoldt.
