Awards & Nominations

PCACAC presents several different types of awards to individuals within the college admission counseling profession.

Apperson Award

The Richard L. Apperson Award, named in honor of PCACAC's first president, is the association's highest honor presented to a PCACAC member.  It is awarded annually to a member whose career embodies the ideals of the association - providing extraordinary service to students, to PCACAC and to the college counseling profession.

Blackburn Award

The John A. "Jack" Blackburn Award for Ethics in College Admission is presented to an individual who demonstrates commitment to the high ethical standards of college admissions through sustained involvement in the profession and who is dedicated to promoting equal access to higher education for all students.  This award is presented annually if there is a qualified candidate. Membership in PCACAC is not a criterion for selection but consideration will be given to professionals in the PCACAC region.

Counselor of the Year Award

PCACAC presents an annual award to one high school counselor and one college admissions counselor from each of our region’s four states and the District of Columbia in recognition of outstanding work in the field.  Membership in PCACAC is not a criterion for selection but consideration will be given to professionals in the PCACAC region.

Flagg Scholarship Award

The Marion R. Flagg Scholarship Award is given annually to a group of exceptional education professionals who are not currently members of PCACAC and have not attended a PCACAC Conference.  These professionals are generally high school counselors, two- or four-year college admission professionals, independent counselors or persons who work in such outreach programs as “I Have a Dream” and “Upward Bound.”  The scholarship is named in honor of Marion R. Flagg, one of the organization's outstanding members and a tireless advocate for underrepresented students.

Powell Mentoring Program Award

The Ann S. Powell Memorial Mentoring Program Award, named in memory of a respected PCACAC leader, is given annually to a group of new college counseling professionals (high school counselors or college admission officers with fewer than five years experience) from within the PCACAC region to serve as an outreach to counselors and schools who may not know that PCACAC exists.  The award matches individuals with mentors and provides scholarships to counselors from schools lacking the resources for professional growth and development.
